BRANCH CHAIR UPDATE

Our recent events have been very well organised and provided a point of difference for the industry.

The ClubMEA event at Palace Nova Eastend Cinemas on 6 July was a great night with a goody bag, good networking opportunity and a current hit movie to follow while the most recent Professional Development session on Key Skills for Success in Social Media on 22 June helped participants learn to build their online business and marketing skills. I extend my thanks to the MEA sub-committees involved in organising these two events.

We intend to continue this trend of providing “something different” in our events in order to offer a valuable addition to our member’s experience and relationship with MEA. Our aim is to have all attendees take something valuable in skills, knowledge, experience or relationship building from every MEA event.

Upcoming events include the Professional Development session “Make your Indoor Event go off with a Bang!” in the first week of September (to coincide with the Royal Adelaide Show) where fireworks are sure to fly and the ClubMEA networking event on Tues 6th September at the Wine Underground, an Adelaide hospitality icon split over two impressive levels and with an ultra modern, chic refurbishment the venue boasts a broad and unique hospitality offering and has been regarded as one of Australia’s Best Hospitality Venues. At this event you will be able to experience a great evening of venue familiarisation, learning in depth how your business can be assisted by some fellow MEA members and take home some more “goodies” in your goody bag.

Mark these events in your diary now and watch for confirmation and registration details.

I encourage you all to contact myself or any committee member (see the MEA website for our contact details) with any ideas, suggestions or feedback for any MEA event or service that you think appropriate.

Thanks and may all your efforts be rewarded

SA Networking Update

Palace Nova Eastend Cinemas – July 2011 ClubMEA

The July ClubMEA offered SA members the opportunity to escape the winter blues with a night of networking and laughs at the Palace Nova Eastend Cinemas.

Centrally located, adjacent the vibrant Rundle Street café precinct, the Palace Nova Eastend Cinemas offered a warm and inviting environment for members to gather and escape (albeit temporarily!) a cold and wet Adelaide winter.

The night commenced with an hour and a half of networking within the privacy of the Peroni lounge, where members mingled enjoying the venue’s selection of premium beverages and canapés provided by external venue caterer Culinetic.

It was a great evening as regular members were complimented by the attendance of new members and the return of a few old faces for the first time in 2011.

After a productive networking session, some fun with the business card draw prizes, and a short address from venue host Heather Bungey, members took the opportunity to top up their glass of wine, pick up a sponsor goody bag and box of complimentary popcorn, and proceed to premium reserved seating to enjoy the hilarious smash hit new movie “Bridesmaids”.

A good number of family, friends and colleagues took advantage of a venue offer to purchase reduced price movie tickets and join in for the movie screening component.

With the positive momentum generated from this event, members can look forward to continuing to develop their industry relationships at the next ClubMEA function in early September at the Wine Underground in Pirie Street.

BioInnovation SA ClubMEA – May 2011

ClubMEA in May 2011 was held at BioInnovation SA at Thebarton – a hidden gem in amongst Adelaide’s meetings and events venues.

This joint ClubMEA networking function, including YMEA members, was a chance for the venue to showcase its flexibility and ability to host small to medium sized meetings, lunches and speaker sessions. The facility has great flexibility with a number of modern internal meeting rooms complimented by other venue facilities such as in-house audio visual, a spacious shade sail covered courtyard bbq area, on-site café, and an external timber decked balcony.

Our function was held in the central lounge, which provided a lovely intimate space for members to network. A superb selection of fresh prepared hot and cold canapés along with South Australian wines and beers were served attentively by the creative on-site caterer Sarah Hancox from “Vite! gourmet to go”.

We were fortunate to have award winning professional speaker, and accomplished author, Kirsty Spraggon in attendance whilst in Adelaide for the night. Kirsty kindly agreed, impromptu, to speak to the group and during her entertaining short presentation it was clear for all to see why she has been so successful.

On departure members were given a goody bag which included literature and items from the venue and some treats kindly donated by member organisations.

An excellent ClubMEA, and another informative and insightful night, for members who will meet again in July for a night at the movies

ClubMEA – February 2011

Our February ClubMEA Event, the first on the calendar for 2011, enabled us to enjoy the hospitality of the Adelaide Convention Centre at their newly created public event called the “Adelaide Cellar Door Wine Festival”.

This dynamic new event on the Adelaide events calendar showcased over 100 wineries and a selection of boutique brewers from all over South Australia. Producers were located in regional clusters from all major wine producing regions within the state to truly provide the public with an opportunity to taste extensively from the entire state within the one convenient city location.

MEA Members gathered at a specially created area within the Clare Valley Wine Region for some canapés, wines and networking. During the function members were treated to a summary of the Wine Industry in South Australia, and Australia, by industry icon David O’Leary. David is now the Co-Owner of O’Leary Walker Wines but was the long-time senior winemaker at Hardy’s and Mildara Blass prior to starting his own company. David spoke with the knowledge, enthusiasm and passion that the wine industry is known for and was extremely entertaining. David concluded his presentation by assisting Branch Chair Darren Mickan to hand out the wine-related business card raffle prizes to three lucky winners on the night.

Regionally inspired canapés were served throughout the function to compliment the array of high quality wines available for tasting. MEA members enjoyed the opportunity to network within the specific area, and then took the opportunity to experience the entire event with a free glass of wine and complimentary Riedel glass included with entry to the event.

Thank you to the Adelaide Convention Centre for making us feel so welcome and for starting our year on such a festive note. We look forward to gathering again at our next ClubMEA event in May.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

The South Australian Branch of MEA are now all a twitter with the potential for engaging customers and colleagues alike through social media. Guest presenter, Michelle Prak of Hughes PR is a well known social media identify and blogger in South Australia and she shared her experiences and expertise of how to harness this sometimes mind boggling medium. Participants were engaged and enthused as the presentation gave us lots o think about – and lots to discuss and left the session with lots of ideas on how to use tools we’re familiar with and an introduction to some we had not seen before. It’s a whole new world out there and with Michelle’s guidance we are now all better placed to evaluate what opportunities this medium offers to our individual businesses.
